Visiting My Sweet Mom, Evelyn

Henry and I buzzed up to Franklin, TN. on his afternoon off this week for the express purpose of taking my mother out to dinner!
Evelyn Beatrice Holm Johnson is ninety four years young.  Half Norwegian and half Swedish, growing up Lutheran in Minnesota where she weathered the severe cold for most of her life, gives her a spunky nature that fits the role God has blessed her with in abundance!
My mom was the mother of five children, grandmother to 17 and great-grandmother to 25 and more to come, I'm sure!
Here's a photo of me with my daughter, Tacy and her son, Anders Eliot (he's no. 25) meeting his great-grandmother last month at Kalmia, our cottage across from Mullins Cove on Lake Nickajack.
Her favorite hymn is "O Love That Will Not Let Me Go" and her example in life of living for Jesus has blessed our large extended family in countless ways.  We know we can ask her to pray about a problem we are struggling with and she will take it up as her assignment to lift us to the LORD in prayer!  What a beautiful heritage to pass on to the next generation.

Bessie

We have a welcome house guest this week!  Her name is Bessie and she is spending her vacation with us, while her owner and our good friend, Terry is out of town.  She's a regular guest,, usually polite and very well mannered and comfortable since she and her mistress lived in our guest house, Morning Glory Cottage many years ago.
It's obvious Bessie knows her way around the neighborhood, when I tell you about her escapade the other night.  I was saying good bye to our two sons and grand dog, Rocky, when evidently she slipped out the open front door.  I did not notice, but later that evening I realized she was GONE!  I panicked, I was SUPPOSED to be watching her, but she found an escape route right under my nose (or knees...she is small).
I stood in the front yard, in my bathrobe whistling towards the dark driveway. I whistled again and again.  Just when I was turning to go back in, I heard a faint jingle, then a blur of white as the prodigal returned with gusto!  She barreled in the front hall and gleefully galloped up and down our long hall about 4 times, proud of her late night jaunt on her own.  Boy, was I RELIEVED to see that naughty, little girl back in our house safe and sound!
Even if Bessie is a little minx, she has won our hearts, along with our granddaughters!
Here's a photo of our Celeste on the left and her good friend, Bessie on the right.

Celebrating Our Granddaughters' Birthdays!

What a delight it is to celebrate the gift of another year of life!

We had MANY such celebrations in our family this year, here's a peek at some happy moments when everyone looks forward to gathering and singing and eating and praying together!

We traveled to Seattle, to visit our daughter Kira and husband Peter and to sing Happy Birthday to sweet Ivey when she turned TWO!

Back in Chattanooga...there was another birthday.
With little Madeleine, it was her very First Birthday in May! She is ONE!
Fresh from heaven, these sweet girls were sent to us and we LOVE being Grandma and Grandpa!

On October 2, darling Frances turned Three and she has learned how to hold up three fingers to prove her age.  She also know how to blow out candles!
Beaming with a big smile, Molly is our oldest granddaughter, she turned FIVE last January! She has started kindergarten and loves going to school every day!

When we celebrated our daughter, Tacy's birthday(Big 30) in
March, we included a ride in the PARTY VAN with Tacy and husband, Stephen, up to Nashville to visit Great Grandma, who is 94, YES, she is NINETY FOUR!And she still enjoys celebrating with cake and ice cream, especially with 3 little Beck girls all around her!
"I will tell of the kindnesses of the LORD, the deeds for which He is to be praised... you are our Father.  We are the clay, you are the potter, we are all the work of your hand." (From Isaiah 63 & 64)

Samson the Great!

Back in 1999, we welcomed a surprise addition to our household - a VERY LARGE, brown dog named Samson that our grown son, Evan had rescued from the pound.  He was pitiful to look at, with major bald spots on his back and quite thin.   Evan learned from a vet that the most inexpensive treatment was driving to the Agricultural Exchange supply store for the medicine. Then Evan would drive this mangy mutt to our house to have his doctor dad give the injections every week.  So the "chemo" and fish oil capsules did the trick and Samson's coat began to re-grow!

We became fond of the BIG Guy, but were still quite startled when Evan announced he was going to study in Seville, Spain and we needed to keep him for a semester.  So he moved in as the young brother and shared the garage with our Border Collie, Celeste.  She was a hyper, 2 year old, prissy female and Samson was thought to be a Chesapeake Retriever, mild mannered, man's dog.  They made quite a pair!
Here we are at Sunset Rock, on top of Lookout Mountain - they were both eager for a run or a hike!     Our nephew, Micah nicknamed Samson "The Walrus", which I must admit, that huge mound of brown did resemble one when he was stretched out napping on our floor.

The LORD blessed us with two GREAT companions, each for 14 years.  Now that Samson has also died, we can imagine them reunited and galloping together through doggie heaven, pausing to share a pungent sniff.

They both revealed an unconditional love for their owners that delighted us daily.  How these two 4 legged creatures brightened our lives for many happy years!

A Dream Come True

Henry's dream to return to Belarus came true in June when we joined the combined choir from 3 churches in Chattanooga to travel to towns, cities and villages to sing praises to the LORD with the excellent Belarussian choir in a large church in Minsk.
We reconnected with our son -in-love, Andrej Demidenko, who lived in our home many summers through The Chernobyl Children's Program.  He is now a fine, handsome young man!
We sang in a children's camp and they sang back to us!
We sang in house churches in several villages.
"May (the LORD) give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed!" Psalm 20:4

Celebrating Through Poetry

Our daughter, Kira lives up to her name.  Her name is Scandinavian and means poem or song. She is teaching high school English in West Seattle, Washington.   Her great grandfather loved to compose poetry, her father and siblings enjoy writing.  She delighted us with this ode several years ago.

A little doggerel and memories on your 60th
                                  from Kira

Here's to a dad
who's really not bad...on your birthday

YOU ARE...
a shiny-headed reader and thinker who is a soft spoken, gentle healer with a bit of wit and dry humor-

a mandolin player, dog walker, cat feeder, marathon runner, anchor of the boat kind of family guy-

foster dad adoptive dad- early riser, endless worker, master of ethics and aches-

king of paperwork stacks on your desk in the afternoons-

geriatric whiz (knowing the difference between the Oh and the Q tongue positions

in the nursing homes), prescription-writer-

who knows when to "take the rest of the day off"...and go get "horizontal,"-

the deep knee-bending kind of dad on family vacations who shrugs off the day with a loud "shoo"-

a doggerel writer, poeeem penner at weddings or other events-

a singer-songwriter who knows the right notes-

round-maker, left-over eater, bio-ethical lecturer and author,

(who put my ninth grade health class to sleep with an enthusiastic euthanasia speech)

YOU ARE
THAT KIND OF DAD
ONE of a KIND
VERY KIND
and very much loved by all those around you!

Thank Heaven for Little Boys

In the year of our LORD, 2013, God has blessed our extended family with a boatload of BOYS!

In February, our nephew, Ben had a son named William.
In April, our nephew, Christopher had a son named Liam.
In early June, our nephew, Micah had a son named Everette.
In late June, our nephew, Matthew had a son named Jude.
Is this beginning to sound like a begat chapter from the Bible?

We truly believe each of these little ones are a wonderful gift from our Heavenly Father, made in His image!

Henry and I are pleased to announce the arrival of our grandson, Anders Eliot.
He was born August 5,2013 at 2:30 a.m.  He was 7lbs 7oz and has brown hair like his dad.
His parents, Tacy and Stephen and their three daughters rejoiced in his safe delivery.
We all welcomed him with lots of kisses and look forward to him meeting his cousin Ivey, when she visits at Christmas time!

"Fear not, for I have redeemed you; and called you by your name, You are mine.
...you are precious in My sight, You have been honored, And I have loved you..." from Isaiah 43.

Anders is the 25th great grandchild of my mother, Evelyn Johnson.  His name reminds her of her father, Andrew from Sweden and her sister, Esther Anderson.  We look forward to the seeing each of these babies grow into men that will seek to serve the LORD.

Celebrating Family on Homecoming Sunday

In the South, there is a tradition to have a Sunday that encourages a church family reunion...which makes it especially nice when your own family members gather together.
Last Sunday, on Labor Day weekend we had just such a celebration at the Little Brown Church on Signal Mountain.  (It's official name is Union Chapel on Walden's Ridge, founded in 1908.)
My husband, Henry, grew up attending this quaint, wooden church in the woods on Signal Mountain.

Henry is playing the mandolin, Sally and Ben Clark played guitar and banjo.  Anna Clower, a cousin is singing"We went down to River to pray, studying about that good old way, and who shall wear the Crown, oh LORD, show me The Way!"
Cousins reuniting and
Henry with his sisters and brother-in-laws back at the old home place that had three names.
1.Grandfather's name - Chigger Hill
2. The handy man's name - T'aint Plumb
3. Grandmother's name - Kalmia (my favorite) in honor of the laurel bushes

"The reward for humility and fear of the LORD
is riches and honor and life."  Proverbs 22:4

There is a joy to life to be able to come together to worship our LORD!

Discovering Scotland Together

Henry went to Scotland as a medical student.  I went to Scotland many years later as a chaperone to my daughter's high school trip.
This time we were blessed to enjoy this beautiful country together! This is Loch Ness, the lake of the monster. "Nessie" didn't appear, but the sun did!
This is my cousin,Carmen and husband Chuck.  We are in The Orkney Islands at the top of Scotland!

Here's my sweet brother laughing as I surprise him with "holy sludge" to remember his baptism.
Abundant joy is having vacation time to spend with those you love!

Back from Across the Sea

I haven't posted in a long, long time!
We have been traveling!!!
Henry and I joined my brother and my cousin Carmen and her husband, along with a larger group from my brother's church to take a cruise around the British Isles.  It was LOVELY and RELAXING!
1st stop was Monet's Garden in Normandy, France. Then we continued north, up the English Channel and stopped several places over the next week of sailing.  What a blessing from the LORD!

A Note of Significance

This is an article I wrote in 1988.

Our youngest daughter loves to sing.  Not softly, but in a strong, clear warble that carries down escalators, across lobbies and along aisles of supermarkets.  She is a blonde, petite four year old who is far from shy.  Many are fascinated by this tiny tot belting out several verses of "Go Tell It On the Mountain" while perched in a speeding shopping cart pushed by an embarrassed mother.  Inevitably, someone stops us and comments, "She knows all the words and is right on key!"  Then they usually pat her on the head and say, "That's very nice, little girl, what's your name?"

  She smiles and replies, "Tacy."
"Tracy, that's a pretty name" they reply.
   "Tacy," she repeats.
   "Stacey?" they question.
"No, Tacy," she begins to get louder.
"Oh,... Casey??" they begin to look puzzled.
"TACY!!! "she shouts.  "Tacy Jane Williams..T..A..C..Y," she spells.

Yes, it is an unusual name, but we feel it suits our special, little girl.  Once in a while there is a glimmer of recognition from someone who's familiar with the Betsy and Tacy series of children's books, written by Maud Lovelace and set in Deep Valley, Minnesota.  Yet, it wasn't just because they are favorites of mine that we chose her name.

My husband, Henry and I are always glad to offer another explanation.  The middle name is easy to understand since it comes from her paternal grandmother and her aunt.  Tacy is a nickname for Anastasia, which reminds us of another special person.

Sister Anastasia was a Catholic nun who was admitted to one of Vanderbilt's teaching hospitals with a heart attack several years ago.  At that time, Henry, a now a practicing internist, was a lowly intern assigned to a cardiology rotation.  He became her "in house" doctor.  He saw her daily until she recovered and returned to the Mother House of her convent.  She soon returned to her job as a music teacher at a parochial school nearby.

That was a tough year for us.  We struggled to balance our schedules.  I was teaching and Henry moved from one specialty to another.  The grueling requirement of his internship  had him on call for thirty six hours, then off only twelve.  It gave us no quality time to nurture our relationship as newlyweds.

Spring arrived, discouragement set in, pressures seemed insurmountable!  As energy faded, stress seemed to win the battle and a crisis resulted.  Every door seemed closed.  Calling a halt to a medical career seemed to loom over us as the only answer.

We turned to friends in a medical Bible study that we attended and asked for their prayers.  Then a short, handwritten note arrived in the mail.

"Doctor Williams,
I want to thank you for the excellent care you gave me while I was in the hospital.
I felt the love of Christ in your kind manner.
         Sincerely, Sister Anastasia "

That simple thank you was the glorious shaft of sunlight breaking through our dark clouds of discouragement.  Throwing in the towel was no longer a temptation.  Medicine still looked promising and a new direction was considered.  We felt a door had opened up; it was possible to serve the Lord Jesus while pursuing a career in medicine.

I wrote Sister Anastasia to tell her how much we appreciated her timely note of encouragement.  Thus began a warm correspondence that reminded us often of Sister Anastasia's daily prayers for Henry's practice and our growing family.

And so it seemed appropriate to chose this special name for our daughter.  Not because she loves to sing and Sister Anastasia was a music teacher, but because her names reminds us of God's demonstration of His personal concern for our lives in a time of crisis.  All because a humble woman took the time to write a simple but profound thank you note.

Tacy Jane Turns 30!!!

Our third child turns the marvelous age of 30 today!  We are so thankful to the LORD for this special gift from Him!  The number three was an important part of her birthday.  She was our third child born in the third month, on the twenty third day in the year 1983! To us, her parents, the number three reminds us of the Trinity and we prayed for her and believe she came from heaven blessed by The Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Tacy Jane is named for her paternal grandmother, Jane Williams Bowers, a wonderful godly woman who lived nearby and loved her well!  She prayed for her and babysat and clothed her in a white jean jacket and black boots!
Her maternal grandmother and grandfather, Evelyn and Kenneth Johnson also loved her well.  They lived in Minnesota and then Florida when Tacy was born.  Her grandfather's birthday was 3 days later on the 26th, so most years we would head to Clearwater on our spring break to stay with them.  It was a very special time of celebration with a homemade cake made by "Nana" for her husband and sweet little granddaughter.
Tacy's first name comes from Anastasia, meaning "one who will rise again".  She was born in the Spring time when all the trees are coming to life again and blooming!  Plus her birthday is close to Easter, the wonderful celebration of our LORD and Savior Jesus Christ who rose from the dead and gives us eternal life.

Encouraging News on Our Book Ann Caldwell and I coauthored Empty Arms 8 years ago and it is uplifting to get news about it almost every week! In the last month, I have heard from a woman I met years ago that works in a ministry to moms. She said she loves to recommend our book to audiences she speaks to because a woman who is healed from the scars of abortion and trusts in Jesus' healing power is a happier, healthier mom as she cares for her children, husband and home. My daughter who lives in Seattle sent me an interesting book report written by a student in her high school English class. She is a teenager who eloquently expresses herself as she reacts to the tragic, true experiences recorded in Empty Arms. She comments on the dire consequences that often follow the quick "fix" of an abortion. Then last week a woman came to see the Wall of Names at the Memorial for the Unborn on Vance Road in Chattanooga. She told our director that she was adopted and received the Bethany Christian Services Newsletter(an adoption agency). There was an article in the newsletter about our book, that told about the memorial and also that the book features adoption stories at the end of the book. We bow before the LORD with humble thanks that He allowed us to share this wonderful ministry to needy people searching for answers to some of life's most difficult choices.

First Signs of Spring

A few of the daffodils and crocuses have made their appearance in our yard in the past two weeks. What a welcome reminder of the promise that spring is just around the corner! "He is faithful that has promised" Hebrews 10:23 "God is ever true to His promises." I Corinthians 1:9

Born in Indian Territory in New Mexico

Last night our family gathered to celebrate our firstborn's 36th birthday. Here's his photo with his niece,Molly. Evan Henry Williams was born in Shiprock, New Mexico, a small town located on the Navajo Indian Reservation. My husband was working for the Public Health Service as a physician and I was working as a teacher at Shiprock Elementary school to all black headed Navajo children. During our 2nd year of living on the reservation, God blessed us with our first child. When my due date drew near, my parents drove all the way from Minnesota to support us in this momentous occasion. They arrived and waited, but no labor pains. So Henry suggested that we take Grandma and Grandpa on a sightseeing tour around our area of desert. A harrowing jeep ride over dusty, bumpy roads up a steep mesa took my parents' breath away! Next we drove out to the foot of the actual rock formation of the Shiprock. It is a sacred mountain to the Indians made from the core of an ancient volcano where the lava sticks straight up. No one is permitted to climb it! It resembles a tall sailing ship from a distance and the Spanish explorers thought they had come to the ocean when they saw its silhouette across the desert. The jolting worked! I went in to labor that night and Evan made his appearance in this world at 8 am. We called my parents to announce his arrival! As my parents walked the one block from our house to the little Indian hospital, they wondered if they would be able to tell which baby in the nursery window was their new grandson? As it turned out, it wasn't difficult at all because their brand new grandson was the only "paleface" in the nursery! We are thankful to the LORD for all 4 Williams children that He blessed us with over the years, but this is the only one born in "foreign" territory.

Remarkable Valentine Week!

Memories,Sweet,Sweet Memories What an amazing week this has been! It started on Sunday with a surprise 40th party for our nephew and Godson, Micah Morrison. His dear wife Allie and mother, Sally asked to host the party at our cabin on the river! Despite the drizzle, there were many warm wishes from family and friends with a roaring fireplace and bluegrass. The celebrating continued at Mellow Mushroom with more family gathering together for pizza. An extra bonus was the first time meeting of two sweet two year old cousins! Margo Morrison and our granddaughter, Frances were born only 4 days apart and finally able to meet and even played Ring Around the Roses together! Tuesday I caught up with my 93 yr. old mom over the phone, then our dear friend, Terry invited Henry and me to her townhouse for a delicious Valentine dinner by candlelight. Fun to share a tasty meal together! Wednesday I met my daughter, Tacy and granddaughter, Molly Beck at the Batterie to outfit her with her first leotard and ballet slippers, she's already five years old and starting a ballet class! Their BIG announcement is that the LORD is blessing their family with a new, little baby to join Madeleine in the nursery this summer! And number 5 grandchild for us! Henry,my MARVELOUS sweetheart of 38 years, brought me breakfast in bed on Valentine's Day! What a blessing he has been in my life!!! Then our son, Evan showed up in his landscaping truck with bales of pine straw and made our yard BEAUTIFUL! Then I had the privilege of arranging several bouquets for the special Valentine luncheon at our church gathering widows from several churches to pray, eat and love being together celebrating God's enduring love for us. Stunned is the best way to describe how the evening developed. Our son,Eric, who has had a rough year, surprised us by coming home for 4 hours to cook his parents a gourmet Valentine dinner of salmon fillets smothered in caramelized mango salsa! And we all wanted to catch up with our west coast family so we skyped with Kira and 21 month old granddaughter, Ivey out in Seattle. What a sweet family evening. Yes, I did eat some chocolate yesterday,too...but sweeter than honey and the honeycomb is God's Word! "Behold what manner of love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called the children of God, and that is what we are!" I John 3:1
